What is an ISIN?
The International Securities Identification Number — a 12-character code (2-letter country prefix + 9 alphanumerics + 1 check digit) identifying stocks, bonds and funds.
How is it validated?
Letters are converted to numbers (A=10…Z=35), and the resulting digit string is checked with the Luhn algorithm.
ISIN vs CUSIP vs SEDOL?
ISIN is the global standard (12 chars). US CUSIP (9 chars) and UK SEDOL (7 chars) are local identifiers often embedded in the NSIN portion of an ISIN.
